Iran Human Rights Strongly Condemns Today’s Massacre of Camp Ashraf Residents

[English] [فارسى]

Iran Human Rights, September 2: At least 52 residents of Camp Ashraf (north of Baghdad) have been killed during today’s clashes between the security forces and Camp’s unarmed residents.
Residents of Camp Ashraf are members of Mujahedin-e-Khalgh (MEK, PMOI) an Iranian opposition group who were disarmed in 2003. Most of the residents but 100, have been relocated to another camp (Camp Liberty) close to Baghdad airport.
Camp residents blame the Iraqi security forces for the attack, while Iraqi Security sources confirmed mortars had been fired, without giving their origin, and said the death toll resulted from later clashes between security forces and camp residents. However, the state run Iranian news agency Fars reported today that "the Iraqi military has closed down the Camp Ashraf".
video clip and several pictures published today show several of the Camp Ashraf residents shot in the head with their hands tied with handcuff.
Iraqi security forces have previously conducted several attacks on Camp Ashraf resulting in death of several of its residents.
Iran Human Rights (IHR) strongly condemns today’s massacre of the unarmed residents of Camp Ashraf and urges the UN and the international community to intervene immediately in order to rescue the remaining residents of the Camp. Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the spokesperson of IHR said:" Iraqi government and the UN are responsible for the safety and security of Camp Ashraf residents. We urge the UN to conduct an independent investigation and bring to justice those responsible for today’s massacre."
